Renowned comet hunter to speak at Nevada County Astronomers’ club

Don Machholz, a prolific living comet hunter and avid amateur astronomer, will be the speaker at the Nevada County Astronomers’ meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City. Machholz will be speaking about the unusual makeup of comet Machholz 1 (96P), which is of great interest to astronomers because of its chemical makeup and unusual orbit. This comet is a “sungrazer,” was discovered by Machholz himself in 1986 and is one of 11 comets he has found. The presentation is free.
