Nevada Union’s Design Team places second at state finals

“Entropic Thunder,” Nevada Union High School’s Introduction to Engineering Design team won second place at California State Finals.

The team consisted of three students — freshmen Lindsey Thomas and Kelly Muir and junior Daniel Green. These three young designers were given a “blind” design brief at 8 a.m. on May 14 at Folsom Lake College, and in seven hours they designed a three wheeled rover that employed the use of an iPad “brain” on a gimballed mount. This robot could map terrain, play “puppy,” develop climate profiles, and respond to its environment — all while teaching programming to its user. Entropic Thunder produced complex industrial design concept sketches, a complete dimensioned mechanical drawing parts set, assembly views, exploded views, materials and manufacturing cost estimates and a 3D model with animations. The team presented their final design to a panel of five judges in a high stakes team pitch.

Nevada Union competed against 14 other teams, mostly from the Los Angeles/San Diego area or the Bay Area, culled from five regional competitions (50-plus schools. The regional group was culled from 600-plus classrooms that teach IED’s Project Lead the Way, a high school engineering program). PLTW extends back 17 years in California, however Nevada Union’s program started last school year.
