The Nevada City Police Department will participate in the National Night Out program for the first time from 6 to 8 p.m. today. A nationwide event held in cities throughout the country, thousands of communities join forces in an effort to build stronger neighborhoods, heighten crime and drug awareness, generate support for participation in anti-crime efforts and strengthen the ties with law enforcement.

The NCPD will host an event tonight on Pine Street between Commercial and Broad streets, and officers will visit various neighborhood events throughout the city. The Pine Street event will include NCPD vehicles, a department K-9 booth, a NCPD Police Officer’s Association food station and a dunk tank, featuring Chief Tim Foley. Proceeds support “Rudiger,” Nevada City’s new canine officer. Other law enforcement agencies will join in, including the California Highway Patrol, Nevada County Search and Rescue and the Nevada County Probation Department. The Nevada City Fire Department will also participate and there may be a visit from McGruff the Crime Dog.

Assorted police related items will be handed out throughout the evening, including items encouraging personal safety, child protection and stronger relationships with law enforcement. For more information, contact the Nevada City Police Dept. at 530-265-4700.
