Lutherans celebrate Reformation Sunday

Choral music and trumpets will herald at this Sunday’s festival worship of Reformation Day, when Lutherans celebrate nearly 500 years of tradition.

Peace Lutheran Church in Grass Valley will mark the day with choral works that include a version of “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” The standard was composed by Dr. Martin Luther, a German monk and university professor who sparked what became the Protestant Reformation when he posted his 95 Theses for reforming the Catholic Church in 1517.

Visitors to the Peace sanctuary will find it decked out in red to celebrate. Nevada County musicians Joe Souza and Phil Richardson will play brass.

The Lutheran church worldwide is gearing up to celebrate the anniversary coming in 2017. Peace Lutheran Church is at 828 W. Main St. in Grass Valley, near downtown. Sunday worship services are at 8:45 and 11 a.m. For more information, call 530-273-9631.
