Simone Becker celebrated her 100th birthday with her son and about 80 friends on Aug. 1 at Eskaton Village in Grass Valley. Born Aug. 1, 1914, on a big farm in a small town near Paris, Becker made her first trip to America in 1932 thanks to a scholarship to Western College in Ohio.

Becker then returned to France where she met her future American husband Benjamin, a medical student, at a local dance. The couple married in New York.

Simone has lived at Eskaton Village for three years and is still devoted to fitness and regularly plays bridge.

During her “quiet time,” she knits helmet liners for soldiers.
