Grass Valley young women win Girl Scout Gold Award

Girl Scouts Heart of Central California will honor two young women from Grass Valley who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award at a formal “Girls Who Inspire” ceremony on June 5 at Sacramento State University.

The Girl Scout Gold Award, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, is presented to “senior” and “ambassador” level Girl Scouts in grades 9 through 12 who have researched, planned and executed programs that created meaningful change within their communities.

Jane Burton worked to improve the website for the local nonprofit Gold Country Community Services.

Eleanor Boling developed a computer application that helps guide college freshmen in the areas of nutrition and wellness. Statistics show that a majority of college freshmen who move away from home gain an average of 15 pounds in their first year. Boling’s effort to help students combat the “Freshman Fifteen” involves an app accessible by smartphones that offers guidelines based on the advice of a nutritionist.

Each girl working toward the Girl Scout Gold Award spends a minimum of 80 hours planning and implementing a project of her own choosing. The council will present 48 Girl Scout Gold Awards this year; just over 5 percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn this honor.
