Grass Valley UPS staff deliver truckload of supplies to Lake County fire victims

Staff at the United Postal Service customer center on Charles Drive in Grass Valley teamed up with their customers to collect supplies for Lake County residents affected by the Valley Fire.

The collection was organized by Trina Matthews, a UPS employee. She said the staff was originally thinking of teaming with United Way to raise money for the fire victims, but she thought that collecting goods would be a more effective and direct way to help.

She secured brown bags from SPD and Holiday Market. Employees donated toys, clothes, shoes and other necessities, and also spread the word to their customers about the collection.

“Everybody got on the bandwagon and started just bringing stuff,” Matthews said.

Eventually, UPS staff had enough donations to fill up one of their trucks — including some bigger items, like furniture and bikes. The supplies were dropped off Oct. 16.

Matthews said she was inspired to spearhead the effort because she remembers the 49er Fire, which burned more than 33,000 acres in Nevada County in 1988. She said she also empathized when she learned that five UPS drivers in Lake County had lost their home in the Valley blaze.

“It just kind of hit home,” Matthews said. “It’s not our county, but why not help?”
