The Grass Valley Pickleball Club is sponsoring a series of free one-hour beginner clinics over the summer, with the next scheduled for 9 a.m. on Aug. 17 at DeVere Mautino Park in Grass Valley. Pickleball was designed to be easy to learn and fun for all ages. Beginners start with a lightweight paddle and a whiffle ball on a badminton-sized court. Many refer to the game as a combination of ping-pong, tennis and badminton.

All the equipment will be provided. Newcomers will need to bring a good pair of tennis shoes, water and a desire to try something new.

With more than 50 members, the Grass Valley Pickleball Club plays regularly — primarily doubles. Drop-ins and new players are welcome for open-play most days of the week. All clinics will be held at DeVere Mautino Park, 10609 Alta Drive in Grass Valley. For more information and videos of the game in action visit
