Grass Valley Film, fundraiser help children of Gaza

The Nevada County Peace and Justice Center will be hosting a fundraiser for the children of Gaza and a screening of the film, “The People and the Olive,” at 7 p.m. today at The Open Book, 671 Maltman Drive in Grass Valley. Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase small, portable solar lights. Each purchase supports the sending of a similar light to a child in Gaza. An estimated 750,000 children in Gaza live in darkness because electricity is out 20 to 22 hours per day. Two styles of solar lights will be available. A donation of $40 will send two of the inflatable lights to Gaza, and one light for the donor to take home. Palestinian olive oil will also be available for purchase.

The feature-length documentary, “The People and the Olive,” chronicles the daily struggles and joys of Palestinian olive farmers. When American ultra-marathoners set out to run 129 miles across the West Bank they discover that the replanting of uprooted olive trees plants “hope and builds cultural bridges.”

The “It’s Time For Light” project is created by the Rebuilding Alliance, a nonprofit charitable organization. For more information, visit In Nevada County, the Project is offered through the Palestine-Israel Working Group.
