Free books for youth at the Italian Festa

Books will be given away to children, youth and their parents during the Italian Festa from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley.

Story Club of Nevada County founder Rose Gander will be present both days of the Festa to spread her love of reading and support young people as they learn to enjoy books. She will have book displays and a space where parents can sit and read to their children.

Gander, of Penn Valley, founded Story Club three years ago to “celebrate reading and the imagination.” Since then, she and friends have given away more than 6,000 books, including such annual events as the Nevada County Fair and World Fest.

Those interested in donating books to the Story Club can drop them off at the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce, 128 E. Main St., in downtown Grass Valley.

The Italian Festa celebrates all aspects of “la famiglia,” including Italian sport, children’s games, food, wine, music, history and culture. Entry is $10; children younger than 12 and active military with ID get in free. For a full line-up of events, visit

Proceeds from the Festa will support the Nevada County Italian Cultural Foundation’s scholarship program.
