“Falls Prevention Awareness Day” on September 23

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution proclaiming September 23 as “Falls Prevention Awareness Day.” More than 1,000 Nevada County seniors and nearly 500 people age 50 to 64 went to the ER because of a fall in 2013 alone. An additional 309 seniors were admitted to the hospital.

In an effort to address the alarming number of falls in the community, the Falls Prevention Coalition of Nevada County is offering their eighth annual free educational event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church at 12889 Osborne Hill Road in Grass Valley.

There will be a program featuring Dr. Debbie Rose, an internationally-recognized falls prevention expert, as well as demonstrations by local experts of how to stay strong and maintain balance. There will be a resource fair, the Forever Young Senior Chorus will sing and morning goodies and a bag lunch by Emily’s Cake and Catering will be offered.

Register by calling RSVP at 530-271-0255. The Falls Prevention Coalition has recently launched a website at http://www.nevadacountyfallsprevention.com.
