New Orleans pianist swingin’ by

New Orleans jazz pianist Tom McDermott loves his city, but not its summer heat.

So he makes it a point of being elsewhere then; hence his current three-week tour of Washington, British Columbia and California.

He plays tonight at North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center. Tony Mociun from Nevada County heard McDermott at a New Orleans jazz club last spring and asked if he would perform at the Schoolhouse. McDermott had a day open between Bay Area gigs, so tonight’s performance was booked.

McDermott will play blues, jazz, Caribbean, Brazilian and ragtime tunes. His favorite composers include Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and James Booker.

Opening for McDermott at 8 p.m. will be a rap and hip-hop set by Jonah Mociun, Tony’s son. Tickets are $8 at the door.

The Schoolhouse is at 17894 Tyler Foote Crossing Road. Call 265-2826 for more information.
