New Orleans music honored

“Katrina’s Wake” is the title of the Meet the Composer event Friday at the Nevada City Winery, presented by the Nevada County Composers Cooperative.

There has been an outpouring of support for the people of New Orleans through contributions and fundraisers. What makes this event unique, and not a fundraiser, is that it focuses on honoring the people and the city, and music that New Orleans spawned in 1895 called jazz. We are looking back at New Orleans as the birthplace of jazz – the American music – and celebrating its composers and musicians – Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, W.C. Handy, King Oliver, Billie Holiday, Pete Fountain, Fats Domino, Clifton Chenier, Dr. John, the Neville Brothers and many more.

NCCC’s composers share a glimpse back at these famous artists and a look forward with six new works as a tribute to this fertile musical area. These new works will be performed by six composers – David Dvorin, Mikail Graham, Jerry Grant, Ludi Hinrichs, Jay Sydeman and Mark Vance. Additional guest performing artists include Lorraine Gervais and Randy McKean.

This event starts at 7 p.m. The winery is located at 321 Spring St., Nevada City. The evening includes fine wine and hors d’oeuvres. Ticket prices are $20 for adults; $5 for students. Because seating is limited, reservations are a must. Call 478-0983.
