Nevada Union student’s summer job with Nevada County Food Bank helps feed kids

Chase Johnson, a 16-year-old Nevada Union High School student, spent his summer making sure Nevada County kids had lunch to eat.

Working alongside a small group of other Nevada County Food Bank employees and volunteers, Johnson helped prepare about 100 meals per day, which were distributed to a YMCA summer camp and to apartment complexes around the county.

Johnson, who runs track at NU, said he was drawn to the Food Bank because his mom, a local teacher, receives food deliveries for her class during the school year. Working for the organization this summer was his first job.

The Food Bank’s annual summer lunch program, which has been operating in Nevada County for 18 years, delivers food to children of low-income families, with the goal of making sure no kid goes hungry during the summer, when school lunches are unavailable.

The nine-week program delivered its last round of lunches this week, and Johnson and his co-workers have hung up their aprons. But the Food Bank is now gearing up for the start of the school year. Project HOPE, which delivers 10,890 snacks per week to 14 Nevada County schools, will begin this month.

Food Bank Manger Bob Dion said the organization receives a high volume of quality food donations.

“We’re very fortunate,” Dion said.

The organization distributes food donations to various locations around Nevada County, and anyone who is in need is welcome to show up.

Food donations are delivered to the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Penn Valley from 10 a.m. to noon on the second Thursday of each month, the North San Juan Center from 10 a.m. to noon on the third Thursday of each month, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Grass Valley on the fourth Thursday of each month, and to the Town of Washington on the first Wednesday of each month.

According to Executive Director John Candelaira, the Food Bank has fed about 3,000 families per month this year through its monthly distributions, outreach program and partner agencies.
