Nevada Union students excel at California Forestry Challenge

Students from Nevada Union High School placed fourth among 13 schools and more than 100 students at the fifth annual California Forestry Challenge, which took place earlier this month at Sly Park in Pollock Pines.

California Forestry Challenge is a competitive event that focuses on the need to manage and restore forests after catastrophic wildfires.

The program included a field trip to the forest area devastated by the Angora fire in South Lake Tahoe and presentations by professional foresters, biologists, and other scientists.

At the event, students constructed barriers to mitigate erosion and planted seedlings to help restore the Tahoe forest. Each team used forestry tools to measure trees, collected scientific data and presented a forest management plan to prevent the chance of future catastrophic wildfires.

The Forestry Challenge was sponsored by The Forest Foundation and the California Forest Products Commission.

The Forest Foundation is a non-profit that promotes public understanding of the role forests play in the environmental and economic health of Californians. The California Forest Products Commission educates people about the state’s forests and the products they yield.

A grant from Wells Fargo Bank helped fund this year’s Forestry Challenge program.
