Nevada Union girls water polo team 8th at shootout

The Nevada Union girls water polo team finished eighth out of 54 squads Saturday at the Sierra Shootout at Sierra College.

On Friday, the Lady Miners, seeded No. 3 in their bracket, opened the tourney with a 7-2 win over No. 2 seed Oakridge behind two goals each from Nicole Blaney, Sydnee Chambers and Robyn Fernandez.

Nevada Union moved to 2-0 in the tourney after beating top-seeded McClatchy 8-3 in the second game. Blaney tallied two goals and Ellie DeMartini, Fernandez, Hayley Chase, Marina McKenzie, and Chambers added one each.

In Friday’s final game the Lady Miners fell to Del Oro in a hard fought match, 4-3. Blaney and Quinlin Grim each tallied goals for the Lady Miners.

On Saturday, Nevada Union lost another defensive battle, this time to Clayton Valley, 3-2. Blaney and Chambers tallied goals for Nevada Union.

In the final match of the tourney, The Lady Miners fell to Merced by one, 7-6.

“We would really like to not lose by one for the rest of the season,” said NU head coach Craig Zetterberg.
