Nevada County gives away mosquito fish today

People looking to control mosquitos on their property without the use of chemicals can pick up some free mosquito fish today at the fairgrounds.

Nevada County will set up a mosquito fish giveaway at the Gentle Giant monument off the Brighton Street entrance between noon and 2 p.m. while supplies last.

The fish are in the same family as guppies and give birth to well-developed active young. They do not require special habitat. Mosquito fish have a large tolerance to unfavorable water conditions, including low oxygen, saline and pollutants. They tend to occupy the shallow shore edge and in captivity live 1-3 years.

Giveaways generally run through the month of June or July pending availability and interest.

For more information call the Nevada County Mosquito Fish Giveaway Information Line at 265-1500.
