Nevada City goals coming into focus

From an original list of 81, Nevada City leaders whittled down their priorities to about 15 Wednesday night.

Spending plans for a transportation sales tax, added signage in the downtown, improving the city Web site, drafting a city parks and recreation plan, updating fees, and reducing drug use and crime were some of Wednesday’s winning suggestions.

Nevada City council members initially debated keeping the transportation sales tax, Measure S, as a part of the goals because it is already in progress with tax money currently being collected and plans set to work on city roads this summer. It’s important to keep the transportation tax spending plan as a goal to let the public know it’s being done right, said City Manager Mark Miller.

A subcommittee of Mayor Steve Cottrell and Councilwoman Sheila Stein will discuss the next steps in the goal setting process. They could categorize the priorities into ongoing, short term, long term or some other categories for future discussion at a council meeting next month, Cottrell said.
