Neil Young co-author at book signing

Well-known musician and artist Jim “Maz” Mazzeo will sign copies Friday of his new book “Greendale,” a “musical novel” co-authored and illustrated with Neil Young – the Young in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Mazzeo and Young became close friends in the 1970s when the artist was road manager for the musical group and illustrator for its albums and CDs. Together, Young and Mazzeo created the fictional Green family, living in Greendale, a small Northern California town much like Grass Valley and Nevada City. Young did much of the text that became lyrics for the future CD and video; Mazzeo did over 140 pen-and-ink illustrations.

“Greendale” highlights lyrics and stories behind 10 songs that touch the bases of Neil Young’s five-decade career: respect for elders and artistic mavericks; suspicion of intrusive media and institutional thinking; anxiety over the planet’s ecology; and faith in the energy, optimism and spirit of youth.

Currently, Mazzeo has a permanent show on display at The Peoples Art Gallery in Santa Cruz.

A wine tasting and reception will be hosted by Burch Hall Winery of Grass

Valley. The Friday book signing will be at 6:30 p.m., at Booktown Books, 107 Bank St., Grass Valley. Call Mountain House Books at 265-0241 for more information.
