Neighbor bristles over Penn Valley dog park

A Penn Valley dog park is causing problems for a neighboring resident who wants to see the park closed down.

The issue will come before Western Gateway Park’s Board of Directors at a public meeting 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 21 in the Buttermaker’s Cottage located in the Penn Valley park.

The dog park opened in 2003 and is frequented by dog owners who come to let their dogs run off the leash within the enclosed 60 foot by 100 foot pen.

The dog park shares a 60 foot border and easement with property owned by Mark Lahr of Santa Cruz. Lahr who came before the board several months ago with his father Wells, who lives on the property, complained that people were using the park after hours.

Since the complaints were made, the board took action to try to remedy the problem. Signs were hung and a gate was erected notifying users of the dawn to dusk curfew in the park.

The Lahrs said the problems did not improve and they want the park to shut down.

“We’re very concerned for the park, the individuals and the neighbor,” said Jim Morgan Western Gateway Park Chairman.

He said the board is reviewing the problem, trying to define it and find a possible solution. If a resolution cannot be made to satisfy the Lahrs, Morgan said the park may have to close or relocate.
