NCTV Library Aid Telethon to raise money for local libraries

You won’t see stars like George Clooney or even Jerry Lewis at this telethon, but local luminaries will shine to help Nevada County Libraries on Saturday. Library Aid, brainchild of educator and co-founder of Nevada County TV, Lew Sitzer, will be six hours filled with the written and spoken word, music and the love of libraries. This joint collaboration between NCTV, The Friends of the Nevada County Libraries and many community volunteers is intended to help maintain the publicly funded and operated County Library System that we currently enjoy. The money raised by this effort will go to the Friends of the Nevada County Libraries.

Headlining the Telethon are noted authors Gary Snyder, Molly Fisk and Steve Sanfield. Also appearing will be poet and movie critic Chuck Jaffee, weight-loss guru and author Carole Carson, The Union Publisher and Editor Jeff Ackerman, musicians Ludi Hinrichs, the Anderson Family, and many other community members and notables.

The Telethon, being shown from 3 to 9 p.m. on Saturday on Comcast Channel 11, Suddenlink Channel 16 (Channel 6 in Truckee) or simulcast live at http://www.nevadacountytv.org, will feature guests reading from their own works or from the locally published anthology, “Open to All: What the Library Means to Me.” This book is a collection of how libraries have impacted people from our own community. Musical offerings, clips from local children’s programs, such as the Nancy Drew Reading Group, and George and Willy’s World will round out the program.

Premiums will be available during the event to those who pledge at different levels. So far, these include a Reno get-away package, artworks, including the Nevada County Fair Best of Show quilt sewn by local youth, autographed books from Gary Snyder, Molly Fisk, Carole Carson, Chuck Jaffee and others, and “Open to All: What the Library Means to Me” books. Citizens Bank of Northern California has already issued a pledge challenge of $250.

Pledge forms are available online from the Friends of the Nevada County Library Web site, http://www.friendsofthenevadacountylibraries.org/news.htm and can be accepted now, or folks can wait to call in during the Telethon.

Library Aid Telephone numbers are (530) 478-6400 ext. 249, 250, 263 and 9530) 478-1174. Donations can be designated for either The Friends of the Nevada County Libraries (Western County Libraries) or The Friends of the Truckee Library. Monies raised will be used to support the operation of the County’s libraries if Library management is not outsourced.
