National investment strategist tells county residents to have faith in ‘boring’ stocks

The stock market may be boring right now, but it will produce reasonable returns over the next five years, a nationally known strategist told investors today at the Alta Sierra Country Club.

Rod Smyth, chief investment strategist for Wachovia Securities, said the market typically goes through four cycles ” boom, bust, bounce and boring.

After the sharp market correction in 2002, stocks are now in the boring phase of the cycle, Smyth said, but should produce gains in the 5 to 6 percent range for the rest of the decade “if you can put up with the volatility.”

Smyth, known to regular viewers of CNBC and CNN, gave a 30-minute overview of investments to clients and guests of the Grass Valley office of Wachovia Securities at a luncheon.
