Names released in fatal crash

Two motorists were killed Saturday afternoon in a multiple-vehicle accident on Highway 49 near Empire Street.

The crash was caused by a pickup truck that entered the freeway’s northbound lanes but was travelling south.

The occupants of the truck, an 87-year-old George Keeler of Granite Bay and his 86-year-old passenger, Laura Gleaves of Mountain View, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The truck ran head-on into one car, spun out and was broadsided by a third vehicle.

The drivers of the other cars, Jason Royals, 29, of Grass Valley; and Margaret Janes, 24, of Nevada City, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.
