The overlooked and under appreciated world of lichen will be given long overdue attention at a workshop held by the Yuba Watershed Institute this weekend.

The event called, “Liking the Lichens” will be led by botanist Cheryl Beyer and held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at the North Colombia Schoolhouse Cultural Center on the San Juan Ridge. A $10 donation is recommended.

The workshop will include a basic introduction to lichens, a walk in the woods to collect some local species followed by hands-on identification.

Lichens are symbiotic organisms made up of fungus and algae and are useful air quality indicators due to their sensitivity to pollution.

The lichen event was made possible by a grant from the Calfed Bay-Delta Watershed Program.
