Music lovers offered choices of musical acts

Spanish-flavored rock and folk singing-audiences have two genres to choose from over the next three days at Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.

“Los Pinguos are on the local music scene’s fast track…” said the Los Angeles Times of the Buenos Aires band who appear tonight at 8 p.m. Playing a mixture of crossover rhythms performed with Spanish guitars, a Cuban tres, a Peruvian cajón (box-drum) and vocal harmonies, they’ve appeared in movies, on TV, with such names as Paul Anka and Plácido Domingo and even beat out the competition in “The Next Big Star” to win the Grand Prize. Last year they appeared at the Sundance Film Festival with singer Suzanne Vega. Tickets are $15.

Dan Bern, called a thinking man’s troubadour, performs Saturday at 8 p.m. The latest in the line of singer/songwriters to wear the “new Dylan” mantle, Bern’s newest musical release, “Breathe,” a project that reunited him with big-league producer Chuck Plotkin (who also worked with Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen). In this album he focuses an observant storyteller’s eye deeper into the characters that populate his songs. Tickets are $18.

Tickets available through the Center’s Box Office at 314 W. Main St., the Center’s usual ticket outlets, online at http://www.thecenterforthearts.org and at the door, if available. Call 274-8384, extension 14, for more information.
