Music in the Mountains Young Composers Program offers key opportunity

Music in the Mountains’ Young Composers Program (YCP) begins Saturday, September 18.

This special education program is designed for youth from junior high through college. YCP provides students the opportunity to work with professional composer/teachers Mark Vance and Jerry Grant from the Nevada County Composers Cooperative.

YCP consists of group classes and private lessons throughout the school year. Students will be expected to write one vocal work for a mid year recital in January and one work that will be performed by professional musicians during Music in the Mountain’s Summer Festival in June.

Classes cover composition, notation, sight singing, melodic and rhythmic dictation, theory, harmony, counterpoint, text setting, contemporary repertoire, listening, public speaking, conducting and music notation software.

Applications are available online at: musicinthemountains.org (select Education, select Young Composers, select application) For more information call: Mark Vance, MIM Education Coordinator, at (530) 265-6173 x 202.
