Move over, Wagner, for kids

It’s a safe bet that most sixth-graders don’t usually choose opera as their favorite music genre.

Not the 28 sixth-graders from the Nevada City School of the Arts.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the students will present an opera they wrote, “The Evil Beans of Noon,” about a fearful king, a mad scientist and a devious plot to gain world domination using the Bad Dream Jelly Bean Scheme.

The students have been involved in all aspects of the opera, from writing the lyrics to building the sets to operating the footlights.

“The Evil Beans of Noon” will be presented at 10:15 a.m. and 7 p.m. both days at Center for the Arts, 314 W. Main St., Grass Valley.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Tickets are at The Bookseller, Harmony Books, BriarPatch and the center.

Call Nevada City School of the Arts at 273-7736 for more information.
