More on salesmen

The June 9 Other Voices “Combating sales techniques with knowledge” offers good information that deserves some additions.

The California Department of Corporations (corp.ca.gov) works to prevent businesses and individuals from conducting unlicensed or fraudulent consumer transactions. The department includes Seniors Against Investment Fraud, which educates elders about various investment and insurance frauds including predatory lending; inappropriate mortgages, reverse mortgages and foreclosures; mass market living trust mills; annuity scams; and Medicare and Medi-Cal fraud, etc. The California Department of Consumer Affairs (dca.ca.gov/legal) publishes numerous legal guides on consumer financing, and the Department of Privacy Protection (privacy.ca.gov) addresses identity theft (1-866-785-9663).

A primary local source of free legal advice for seniors in these matters is the nonprofit Legal Services of Northern California on Sutton Way in Grass Valley (274-3554). If seniors believe they’ve been victims of financial elder abuse, they can call Adult Protective Services at 265-1639.
