Montgomery plays his unique brand of music tonight

Playing his unique brand of alternative folk pop, which he says was influenced by a wide range of musicians ” from Bob Dylan, his song writing idol, to Sam Cooke, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen and Eric Satie ” John Montgomery appears tonight at the BellaVista Ristorante, 101 Broad St. in Nevada City, at 8 p.m.

He released his debut album, “One Step Away,” on Circus Drum Records in the fall of 2002, songs from which have appeared on cable television shows and in independent films. Says Allison Miller, a DJ from KVMR radio in Nevada City, of the album, “the melodies, instrumentation and voice are all beautiful and accessible. The lyrics are poetic, mysterious and sensual. This music will get regular air time on my radio show, for certain.”

Montgomery’s training as a scientist (unbelievably, he has a

doctorate in neurobiology) has helped his music, he says. “For me, writing a song is very similar to doing scientific research. There’s that same overpowering sense of excitement and release when you think you have something, when you think you’ve found or rendered some little piece of the truth.”
