Modesto area organist gives recital

The Union staff

Although Arvin Nicholas Berner’s musical career is focused in the Central Valley, he is anxiously awaiting his organ recital Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Grass Valley.

Berner is Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church’s organist and choir director in Patterson, Modesto First Christian Reformed Church’s organist and the American Guild of Organists’ Stanislaus chapter dean.

When asked why he would play a concert in Grass Valley, Berner replied, “Grace Lutheran has an excellent pipe organ in good acoustics. I have played the instrument before and I enjoy it. It is a finely crafted instrument, and one that should be played in concert.”

That organ built in 1992 by the M.L. Bigelow Co. is a mechanical or tracker action instrument and consists of nine speaking stops and approximately 15 ranks.

Friday’s local concert will feature Berner in works by Mendelssohn, Buxtehude and Bach.

The 7:30 p.m. concert has no admission charge; a free-will offering will be taken.

Grace Lutheran Church is at 1979 Ridge Road.

Call the church at 273-7043 for more information.
