Misleading on Prop. 71

It’s frustrating reading misleading phrasing of Prop. 71 as being “stem cell research” rather than embryonic stem cells.

Adult stem cells are plentiful. Embryonic stem cells require sacrifice of embryos. As of 2001, over 500,000 embryos had been put through the grinder with no resultant therapy. The sales pitch that we’d be using spare embryos from fertility clinics is wrong; there aren’t enough, and clinics already produce embryos for experimentation.

Adult stem cells have demonstrated the ability to differentiate/develop into different major cell types in the body with controlled growth. Embryonic stem cells grow aggressively, 20 percent developing cancer.

Voting for embryonic stem-cell research is voting for cloning ” the former cannot work without the latter. The argument cloning will be allowed for therapy and not reproduction ignores the two methods of cloning are the same, differing only in incubation period.

The Christopher Reeves Paralysis Foundation has funded studies showing repair of spinal injuries in quadraplegic animals with adult stem cells. No success with embryonic stem cells.

We don’t need embryonic stem-cell research. The promise of stem cells is being achieved with adult stem cells. Every stem-cell therapy in the world brought forth to date has come from adult stem cells.
