Mine Chief Uninformed on Purpose of EIR

Idaho-Maryland Mine Corp. President Watkinson (The Union, June 5) is disappointed that Wolf Creek Alliance opposes the mine prior to completion of the Environmental Impact Report … “which would allow WCA to make informed decisions.”

Why, before the EIR, are Mr. Watkinson’s opinions informed, but WCA’s not? Further, he seems to assume that, once the EIR is published, we will approve the mine. For Mr. Watkinson, being informed equals approval, and disapproval means you’re uninformed. Can you define self-serving?

I thought the purpose of the EIR was to objectively apply public interest standards to the mining plan, and if the plans are found deficient, to then determine if the problems can, or cannot, be mitigated. For Mr. Watkinson, however, the EIR’s purpose is to justify the mine’s approval; in other words, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Does he know the EIR’s conclusions before its publication? Aside from paying for the EIR and providing city analysts with data, what actual influence has he had on the EIR? And why would he ignore his own advice and make uninformed decisions before the EIR is published?
