Migliozzi wins again, secures league title

The Miners’ cross country team traveled to the dusty hills of Rocklin at William Jessup University for the Sierra Foothill League Championship Friday and came away with an individual title, five top-10 finishes, nine top-20 finishes and a third-place boys team finish.

Senior Garrett Migliozzi ran away with the victory in the Varsity-JV boys race setting a personal record of 15 minutes, 13 seconds on the fast 5K course, just four seconds ahead of the next competitor. Also running in the race were Max Arnds, who finished 32nd (17:33); Skyler Cotton, who came across 46th (18:23); Evan DeJardin (20:00); Yoshioki Jinzenji (20:26); Kyler Vaugh (21:32); Nick Pastre (21:39); Colton Miles (21:41) and Alex Voboril (21:52). There were 93 runners in this final race of the day.

The top finisher for the Lady Miners in the combined Varisty-JV girls race was Nora Pizzella, who grabbed a sixth- place finish with a new personal record of 19:02. Kristina Martinez ran in not too far behind for the 13th spot (19:35), Erika Wolf followed in 14th (19:40), Joy Castro-Weir took 27th (20:31), Kali Arvidson came in 28th (20:35), Alyse P. was 29th (20:39) and Karina Martinez finished 36th (21:13). Also completing the run were Marina MacKenzie (21:58), Holly Harrison (22:02), Kelly Rutherford (24:13), Maddie Campbell (24:44), Felicia van Hecke (25:59) and Emily Pieper (31:50). With a tie for fourth in the SFL team standings, the varsity girls hope to use their strength as hill runners at the upcoming CIF subsections and garner a team spot at the State meet.

The frosh-soph boys had a very strong showing on their 2-mile course, finishing three runners in the top 10 with Devon Cloud in third (11:10), Colby Scanlon sixth (11:22), Josh Harris seventh (11:29), Callan Warner 17th (12:00) and Everett Noel 19th (12:02). Also huffing and puffing for the Miners were Myles Montgomery (13:08), Kyle Panno (13:45) and Sam Longmire (14:04). The frosh boys took third as team for the meet and third in the final SFL team standings behind league champ Del Oro. Frosh girls running Friday were Caitlyn Johnson (15:03), McKenna Brennan (15:11), Kelsie Arvidson (16:03) and Sara Thomas (16:17).

The Miners travel to Angels Camp next weekend for the CIF Subsection Championship.
