‘Midnight at Mel’s opens at Off Broadstreet Friday

“Midnight at Mel’s,” should be a delight for musical comedy fans when it opens Friday night at the Off Broadstreet Theatre in Nevada City.

The story is set in a California desert town where the inhabitants want to put on a new TV program to rival “The Ed Sullivan Show” as it was in 1959. Audience members of all ages will hear a live band doing renditions of doo-wop songs that dominated 1950s’ radio.

“It takes place in a small town,” said theater owner and play author John Driscoll. “The audience will see people just like they are who had a hidden talent and gift and are trying to realize a dream.”

Included in the cast are Off Broadstreet co-owner Jan Kopp, with stage veterans Nancy Keith, Sue LeGate, Richard Joplin, Greg Gavin, Darryl Stines and Jim Thornton.

The show begins at 8:15 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and runs through Feb. 26. Special performances will occur at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20.

Admission for the special shows will be $18, with Friday shows at $20 and Saturday performances at $22. Advance reservations are recommended.

The Off Broadstreet Theatre is at 305 Commercial St.
