Merle Butz

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the North San Juan Fire Hall for Merle C. Butz. Internment will take place at the Camptonville Cemetery in Camptonville. Mr. Butz passed away March 13 at his ranch in Celestial Valley. He was 89.

Mr. Butz was born on Feb. 7, 1918, to Peter and Jennie Butz at the family ranch in Celestial Valley. He attended local schools and was employed at the local saw mills. He retired from Sierra Mountain Mills in 1983.

Mr. Butz was a cattle rancher and an active member of the Nevada City Elks for many years.

He enjoyed hunting and gardening; the produce from his huge vegetable garden was enjoyed by many local families.

He is survived by his wife, Annis, of 56 years and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Butz was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lawrence; and brothers, Walter, Chester, Fred and George.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to your charity of choice.

Cremation is under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
