Memorial Park pool cuts swim rates for summer

Swim for less this summer at Memorial Park pool, with rates coming down to $2 for children and $3 for adults and seniors.

Grass Valley City Council members voted to reduce the fees after two summers of higher rates ” and lower pool attendance. They hoped the measure would make the city’s pool more competitive with the Pioneer Park pool in Nevada City, which charges slightly less for both children and adults.

Rates at the Memorial Park pool rose from 2002 to 2003, and attendance remained pretty much the same, with more than 9,400 visits to the pool in the summer of 2003.

But when rates rose again in 2004, to $3 for children and $4 for adults, attendance sank like a stone to about 5500 people, according to a city report.

The pool took in nearly $26,700 in 2005, but cost the city more than $66,300 to operate. The fee increase is projected to bring in nearly $29,500 in 2006.

“We knew there was a risk when we raised the rates,” city public works director Jeff Jewett told council members at a meeting last week. Then he recommended dropping the entry fee. “We think we’ll make 40 percent back (in attendance), and we’ll also earn more in concession sales.”

Friday Night Frolic will cost $2; children under 6 years will get in for free. The pool is available for private parties.
