Medicare deadline arrives today

Today, Monday, May 15, is the last day to sign up for Medicare drug plan and not be penalized if you do not already have one.

Those without a plan can still sign up from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31 this year but will pay a 1 percent per month penalty. That will add up to 7 percent more on their premiums, because the plan will not kick in for those people until January 1, 2007.

People who kept their old plan or chose a new one already are not effected by today’s deadlines. According to Lynne Nugent at the Helpline often called by seniors in Nevada County, you can still get your coverage over the Internet by logging on to http://www.medicare.gov

Here are some phone numbers if you need last minute help:

– Medicare, 1-800-633-4227.

– Area 4 Agency on Aging, ask for Lori, 1-916-486-1876.

– HICAP, Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program, 1-800-434-0222 or 1-916-376-8915.
