Meagher’s candidacy crowds Treasurer-Tax Collector race

Dai Meagher has added his name to a crowded June 8 primary race for the vacated Nevada County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s spot.

“I didn’t think the candidates who announced had a background as a CPA to offer,” the Certified Public Accountant said Thursday.

“It’s a $100 million-plus operation that requires a strong sense of accounting and internal controls to make sure all the assets are secure,” Meagher said. “You have to know a lot about investing too, and I felt that a CPA would best serve the county.”

The Bay Area native has lived in the Grass Valley area for the past seven years. He runs his CPA office out of his home, which he shares with his wife and school-age son.

Meagher is a graduate of the University of Southern California, and also owns an accounting systems installation business. His unique first name is Welsh, and his entire name is pronounced “Day Mahar.”

Meagher said he pulled his candidacy papers Wednesday from county elections office, and intends to turn them in by Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline to become an official candidate.

Only Darlene Woo has done that so far, according to county records. Tina Vernon and Rick Nolle have pulled papers to be turned in by Friday, according to the elections office.

Bill Steele has announced his candidacy, but had not pulled papers as of Thursday morning. He said earlier this week that he still intends to run.
