Maybelle Keene

Memorial services for Maybelle Christie Keene of Nevada City will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary. Burial will be at the Pine Grove Masonic Cemetery in Nevada City.

Mrs. Keene died Sunday, Dec. 28, at home. She was 90.

She was born Dec. 25, 1913, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Anna Dunston and Percival Christie. She graduated from Darby High School in Darby, Pa., in 1931. She married J. Howard Keene on Jan. 10, 1937, at St. James Church of Kingsessing in Philadelphia. She was a homemaker and worked as the bookkeeper/secretary for Keene Plumbing for 20 years.



She was a Past Worthy Matron, Evangeline Chapter No. 9, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Unity No. 65 and founding secretary/treasurer for the Nevada City Little League. She served as a Den Mother for Pack 23 of Nevada City Cub Scouts.

She is survived by her son, Michael Keene of Nevada City; brothers Percival Christie of Lima, Pa., and Ralph Christie of Ashton, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Howard Keene in February 2000; son, Robert Keene in August 2000; sisters Marion Graf and Ann Silver; brother, Richard Christie; and parents Anna and Percival Christie.




Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
