Mary Valdez

A memorial Mass for Mary Evelyn Valdez of Nevada City will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Canice Catholic Church in Nevada City.

Mrs. Valdez died Wednesday, Jan. 8, at a local medical facility. She was 80.

She was born on May 18, 1922, in Nevada City, to Ulyses McKinley and Leona Catherine (Lotz) McKinley. She was raised in Nevada City and attended Gold Flat Elementary School and graduated from Nevada City High School in 1939. She married Leonard Valdez on Sept. 1, 1940. She worked at Dickerman Drugs, The Food Palace and late DeMartini Drug Store in Nevada City. She was an active member of the Nevada City Fire Department Fire Auxiliary and the Rough and Ready Square Dancer. She was a member of St. Canice Catholic Church in Nevada City. She was an expert seamstress.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard Valdez of Nevada City; daughters, Jean Hafelfinger of Grass Valley, Joan Laumann of Auburn and Judy Giles of Kennewick, Wash.; son, Jim Valdez of Grass Valley; sister, Leona Riddle of Carmichael; brother, Bob Lotz of Sacramento; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Hershel Lotz.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors’ choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
