Mary Black

A memorial Mass for Mary Jeanette Black of Grass Valley will be conducted at noon today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and will be officiated by Father Tim Nondorf. Private interment will be at the North San Juan Catholic Cemetery.

Mrs. Black died Saturday, Jan. 15, in Grass Valley. She was 81.

She was born Dec. 31, 1923, in Chaffee, Mo., to Homer Short and Mary G. Shaw. She married Charles Black in 1950, in Las Vegas. She worked for Sears Roebuck in Los Angeles for 20 years. She enjoyed crocheting. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughters, Rita Oaks, of Grass Valley, Mary Frances Black of Williamsburg, Va.; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Virginia Black of Yuba City; granddaughter Sheryl Frame of Grass Valley; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law Bill and Wendy Oaks of Phoenix, Ariz., Steven and Lori Oaks of Penn Valley, and James and Michelle Oaks of Grass Valley; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Charles Black, on Aug. 19, 1994.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Angels Mortuary.
