Martin Hedrick Sr.

Visitation for family and friends of Martin “Buddy” Wesley Hedrick Sr. of Grass Valley will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the home of George and Tina Harrison, 12444 McCourtney Road in Grass Valley. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Stivers Indian Cemetery in Quincy.

Mr. Hedrick died Thursday, April 4, at home. He was 79.



He was born on Nov. 27, 1923. He was a California American Indian and attended school in Quincy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was a prisoner of war in Germany.




After the war, he returned to Quincy, where he worked in the timber industry with his older brothers. He was a well-known contestant in logging sports and became a world champion in many events.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frieda Hedrick of Grass Valley; daughters Jill Hughes of Grass Valley, Tina Harrison of Grass Valley and Roselene McGary of Claremont, N.H.; sisters Shirley Martinez of Quincy, Doris Winkler of Willows and Sue Carrol Gibson of Oroville; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Martin Wesley Hedrick Jr.
