Martha Miller

Memorial services for Martha W. Miller of Grass Valley will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary. Burial will be at the Camellia Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento.

Mrs. Miller died Friday, Feb. 20, at Meadow View Manor in Grass Valley. She was 106.

She was born July 18, 1897, in Harvey, N.D., to Simon and Eva (Schopp) Bitterman Winter. In 1910, at the age of 13, she and her family moved to Castor, Alberta, Canada. She married Jacob Meckler April 14, 1914, and they immigrated in 1921 to Washington state, where they both became naturalized citizens. Jacob Meckler died June 3, 1973, and she married George Jackson Miller Nov. 28, 1970. He died July 6, 1984. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Grass Valley Host Lions Club and the North Sacramento Womens Club. She enjoyed reading the Bible, playing dominoes and watching Larry King. She had lived at Sierra View Manor, was a longtime resident of The Bret Harte Retirement Inn, and most recently had lived at Meadow View Manor.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Elinor and Frank Sheets of Grass Valley and Grace and William Forrest Haney of Kent, Wash.; and grandchildren David and Robin Lugar of Roseburg, Ore., Darren and Candace Sheets of Bonsall, Todd and Bobbie Sheets of Los Angeles, Kevin Lester of Anchorage, Alaska, Jim and Cheryl Haney of Seattle Wash., Tom and Marilyn Barney of Tacoma, Wash., Richard and Patti Haney of Enumclaw, Wash., Arthur Meckler and Donna Cooper of Philadelphia, Pa., Michele Meckler of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Charles and Barbara Taylor of Media, Pa.; great-grandchildren Jessica and Michael Lugar of Roseburg, Ore., Dylan Jacob Sheets of Bonsall, Bridget Haney of Seattle, Wash., Matthew, Colin, Bryan, Meghan and Kathleen Barney of Tacoma, Gregory Christie of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Lily and Andrew Taylor of Media, Pa. She was preceded in death by her father, Simon Winter on July 9, 1932; mother, Eva Winter on Jan. 4, 1952; sons Alfred Meckler on March 25, 1993, and Arthur Meckler on April 30, 1990; sisters Emma Meckler on April 1972, Lydia Bryant on July 29, 2000, and Leontina Roth on March 5, 2003; and brother, Alfred Winter on Feb. 12, 1955.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
