Mark Davis to retire
When a business owner chooses to retire, knowing the company can live on under a trusted name can bring a sense of relief. Such is the case for Mark Davis.
After owning Mark Davis Plumbing since 1990, Davis is retiring and referring his longtime customers to Craig Johnson of CJ Plumbing.
“When I decided to close my business, I wanted to be able to refer my customers to someone I can trust,” Davis said.
“That’s why I chose Craig to help my customers.”
CJ Plumbing was founded in 2004, serving Nevada County and the Auburn area.
Craig and Denise Johnson said Davis’ decision to refer customers to their business was nothing less than an honor.
“It was a wonderful feeling to have somebody trust you like that,” Johnson said. “He obviously had a lot of faith in me to be able to take care of his customers and we’re very fortunate for that.”
Johnson has been involved in plumbing since his grandparent’s bought a family ranch in Grass Valley in 1972, where he learned about ranch irrigation and plumbing.
“We had multiple properties over the years and we worked on plumbing,” he said.
Johnson moved to Tahoe City in 1983 and worked with a plumbing contractor, as well as Van Gas/Suburban Propane where he learned about gas piping and running gas lines.
Denise has been involved with plumbing ever since she was a child, as her father Bart was a plumber in Auburn, operating Rocket Rooter in Auburn for more than 20 years.
The Johnsons moved to Grass Valley in 1999 and Craig became a licensed plumber and opened Craig Johnson Plumbing in 2004.
When Denise’s father was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, Craig and Denise helped run Rocket Rooter, eventually taking over the business, operating both Rocket Rooter and CJ plumbing.
CJ Plumbing and Mark Davis Plumbing referred business back and forth and when Davis considered scaling back his business to prepare to retire, he began referring customers to CJ plumbing in early 2012.
“I’ve been referring him and vice versa for many years so it seemed like a natural match,” Davis said.
The increase in calls due to the referrals has increased business at CJ Plumbing, Denise said.
“We’ve really noticed an increase in calls and the extra business has been great,” Denise said.
Though letting go of a business can be difficult, Davis said he is relieved to be able to send his customers to a place he can trust.
“I’ve known them for years,” Davis said. “I personally can say that I’m happy to refer them.”
