Man steals police car

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Authorities are searching for a man who stole a Riverside police car and drove away as an officer shot at the vehicle.

Sgt. Dan Russell said the car was later found crashed and abandoned in Jurupa Valley Sunday.

Police said the suspect first came under police scrutiny when an officer spotted someone driving erratically shortly after midnight, and tried to stop him. The officer followed the driver and saw him stop in some bushes, got out of the car and ran away.

Police said during the foot chase, the man made his way back to the scene, got in the patrol car and sped off.

Russell said the officer shot at the man as he started to drive away, but apparently missed.
