Man pleads to lesser offense in sex case

A Nevada City man initially facing a felony accusation of having sex with a minor pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and has started his jail sentence, authorities said.

Jonathan Thomas Rogers, 26, entered the Nevada County Jail on Monday to start his 60-day sentence on a misdemeanor count of having sex with a minor who was more than three years younger than him, authorities said.

“Multiple factors go into the resolution of cases such as this, including level of cooperation from the victim, input from the victim and their family as well as considering whether taking a case to trial would ultimately cause further trauma to any victim,” the District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

The Public Defender’s Office, which represented Rogers, couldn’t be reached for comment.

According to reports, a family member of the victim reported the crime. Authorities arrested Rogers in early June after he failed to appear in court.

Rogers pleaded guilty in early July to the misdemeanor, and was booked into jail Monday to start his sentence, authorities said.
