Ludi Hinrichs’ CHICKENBONZ performing at Bent Metal Winery grand opening

Well known to Nevada County and beyond, Ludi Hinrichs brings a whole new mix of talent and experience to the Bent Metal Winery’s grand opening this Saturday with his six-piece group, CHICKENBONZ. This is jazz crossover, original music and arrangements with a few select covers. CHICKENBONZ has a flair for quirky humor, skilled showmanship, and tasty four part horn arrangements.

“We bring the jazz, blues and European classical heritage together with Balkan, and North Indian/Asian sounds and rhythms drawn from deep experience,” Hinrichs said. “I know that’s a mouthful, but it’s true!”

All six members sing, and audience members have loved to playfully scat sing along on swinging tunes such as “There Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens.” The objective seems to be “go deep and have fun.”

Their diversity really comes through when they hop from chickens to a Russian six-part deep bass chorale, followed by the Serbian tune “Epstein Cocek,” which starts out with a slow, haunting, stately violin solo, gradually accelerating to a real kicker.

The lineup is Joe Fajen, trombone, tabla, and percussion; Lou Invernonon, saxes, flute, and clarinet; Murray Campbell, oboe, English horn, and violin; Ludi Hinrichs, trombone, piano, frame drum, didjeridu, and lead vocal; Tom Hannickel on stand up bass, and Kit Bailey on drums and percussion. Sound is by Ken Schumacher of Live Vibes.
