Local voices, vision unite to honor International Women’s Day

“We are not trying to change minds Ð We are connecting hearts.”

– Motto of the local chapter of Gather the Women

Women of all ages, take note. There’s a gathering taking place to honor an auspicious date: International Women’s Day, which is celebrated worldwide on March 8.

Locally, it all happens Wednesday at the Miners Foundry in Nevada City. The evening, called “Women’s Voices, Women’s Vision,” will include music and dance with such musicians as Lisa Stine and Tynowyn – “all to represent joy and exuberance of women connecting around the world in many nations on this special day,” says one of the organizers, Judith Hurley Prosser. It will also include important messages, such as a screening of an audio/video message from noted author and futurist Jean Houston, and a book will be available for sale: Jean Shinoda Bolen’s book “Urgent Message From Mother: Gather The Women, Save the Earth,” which was actually inspired by the Gather the Women movement. Local women from 26 to 70 plan to speak about their visions and what has inspired and motivated them in their lives.

Networking, one of the ways women work best, will take place before and after the event. Marilyn Nyborg, co-founder of the Gather the Women movement, is a strong supporter of networking and its power. “It’s by connecting with one another as individuals and as groups,” she says, “that we are able to collaborate in ways that will bring women’s wisdom and influence to the issues the world now faces.”

Networking begins at 6 p.m. with the program starting promptly at 6:45 p.m. Admission is $5. Food, including light dinner fare, will be available for purchase. The Foundry is at 325 Spring St. If you cannot attend this event, Gather the Women invites you to a follow-up meeting at 6:45 p.m. on April 11 at the Nevada City Methodist Church, at which Gathering Circles will be formed.
