Local teachers to retire

Come June, 28 teachers and two administrators in the Nevada Joint Union High School District will retire. Some of them have taught at local high schools for more than three decades. To recognize their invaluable service to the community, The Union is featuring their self-created profiles. – Soumitro Sen, Staff Writer

Grades and subjects I’ve taught: Life science, drivers education, physical education, health and biology to grades 9 through 12.

Name: Cherry Hayes

Years of service in the high school district: 1989 to 2007.

Schools I’ve taught in: Bear River High School, Magnolia School; John Barrett Middle School and Greer Elementary in the San Juan Unified School District.

Grades and subjects I’ve taught: Choral music at the junior high and high school levels. Elementary music specialist, kindergarten through sixth grade. Elementary classroom teacher, third through sixth grade.

Comments on retirement: After 37 years of teaching, I look forward to this new chapter in my life, but will miss the music and the students. I have been blessed to combine my passion – music and young people – into a career. I have made lifelong friends and memories that I will cherish forever.

Plans for the future: I look to the future with great excitement and anticipation. I plan to finally sing in the choir at Calvary Bible Church. I will do a little traveling, mostly visiting family and friends. I will finally write my book, Bound by the Bell. I intend to teach music and movement privately and in small groups. My greatest achievement will be learning to sleep in until 7 a.m.
