Local Red Cross raising money for local disaster relief

The local Red Cross will raise money Saturday at S.P.D. Markets in Grass Valley and Nevada City and at the Save Mart supermarket on Nevada City Highway, volunteer Pete Santiago said.

“The fundraiser is because we are still responsible to take care of (people in case of) local disasters,” Santiago said. “For instance, if someone got flooded out of his house, or if there was a fire, we would provide the displaced person shelter at a local hotel or motel and give him food and clothes.”

The local Red Cross has been struggling with its finances, in recent times, due to fewer donations. According to Santiago, the non-profit went through a reorganization few months ago. Besides relocating to a rent-free facility on New Mohawk Road in Nevada City, the Red Cross cut two paid positions to reduce its operational costs.

On Saturday, volunteers from Red Cross will be present outside the stores from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We’ll be there with buckets, asking for donations,” Santiago said.

The last time the organization did a similar fundraiser was in April, Santiago said.
